What are the required purification steps for water in drink production?
The exact steps required to achieve the ideal water quality for your beverage production depend on a number of factors, but here are some of the most widely used technologies and processes:
Mechanical cleaning
This pre-treatment of inlet water is done either with ultrafiltration, cartridge filters or backfill filters to avoid clogging or contamination of subsequent water treatment systems in your production facility.
Complex purification
In this step, impurities such as hardness salts, iron, manganese, and organic matter are removed from the water intended for beverage production – we often recommend our patented ECOMIX® technology for this step.
Sorption purification
Chlorinated water doesn’t taste very good, but it’s the standard in many countries for health reasons. To remove any residual chlorine from the water to be used in the drinks you produce, activated carbon filters are often added.
Reverse osmosis (RO)
The final purification step is usually RO filtration, which removes about 99% of all dissolved impurities and makes sure the water complies with sanitary-chemical and microbiological standards.

As reverse osmosis removes about 99% of dissolved impurities from water, it’s a particularly good choice for the purification of water that’s used as an ingredient in drinks.
