WHY HARD WATER IS A PROBLEM
Limescale is common issue in many areas caused by hard water. White deposits on kettles, coffee machines or pots are something almost everyone recognises. But limescale isn’t just a visual nuisance – it affects the taste of your drinks and can reduce the lifespan of your kitchen appliances.
A water softener can help you soften your water and prevent limescale buildup in your coffee machine, kettle, and more. The result? Better-tasting drinks, less cleaning effort, and appliances that last longer!

FAQ: Answers to your questions about home water softeners
-
How do the Ecoosft limescale filters for tap work?
Our systems use special filter media to reduce water hardness. Depending on the model, limescale-causing minerals like calcium and magnesium are either retained or replaced with gentler ions – resulting in softer water with fewer deposits.
-
How often do I need to change the filter cartridges?
Change intervals vary by model and usage. The Slim Filter Jug, for example, requires a new filter cartridge every 4 weeks, while other solutions need replacing every 3–24 months. Our premium model, the CROSS 90, even notifies you automatically with an LED indicator.
-
Is soft water healthier than hard water?
No. Hard water that causes limescale buildup isn't harmful to your health – but it can affect the taste of the water in your home and damage your appliances.
-
Can I use the filters in a rented flat?
Absolutely! Many of our limescale filters – from jugs to under-sink systems – are perfect for rented homes. No drilling, no complex installation: just connect and enjoy fresh, clean water.
-
What are the benefits of soft water for coffee machines or kettles?
It extends the life of your appliances as it prevents limescale buildup in the coffe maker or your kettle. This doesn't just extend the lifespan of your appliances, it also saves money, time, and energy.
-
What Causes Limescale in Household Appliances?
High levels of calcium and magnesium in water cause limescale deposits in household appliances.
-
How Can I Tell If I Have Hard Water?
If surfaces in your kitchen and bathroom that come in contact with water are covered with chalky coating, the water in your house is hard. Also, reduced pressure in pipes and frequent failures of appliances are signs.
-
Can Hard Water Affect Skin and Hair?
Hard water makes skin and hair extremely dry. Interacting with soaps, it forms a film on contact surfaces that dehydrates them.
-
Which Appliances Suffer Most from Limescale?
Appliances such as electric kettles, coffee machines, dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers suffer most from limescale because they constantly come into contact with water.
-
How Often Should Water Softeners Be Serviced?
A maintenance schedule depends on water hardness, the softener model, and the frequency of its use. Typically, you are expected to check the salt level in the brine tank every 4 to 8 weeks to ensure it is above the water level and add it, if necessary.
-
Does Softened Water Improve Laundry and Cleaning?
Softened water improves laundry, as it contributes to a deeper stain removal and softens fabrics. Also, it is better for keeping the house clean because of more efficient interaction with detergents and the reduced use of household cleaning products.

To remove limescale from tap water, point-of-use softeners are used. On the Ecosoft online shop, you can buy it as a standalone unit or with a reverse osmosis filter at a reasonable price.
What Causes Limescale in Water?
Limescale is caused by hard water that contains high levels of calcium. Groundwater, when flowing through soil, dissolves limestone consisting of calcium. A balanced concentration of this mineral improves taste characteristics, providing smooth water texture, contributes to bone and teeth health, and supports cardiovascular function. But when calcium is blended with magnesium and its concentrations reach 121 to 180 mg/L or exceed a high threshold of this range, water is considered “hard” or “very hard”.
How Hard Water Affects Your Home
Exactly when calcium concentration is at levels above 120 mg/L, scale deposits appear, which negatively affect households. Hard water reduces the effectiveness of soaps and detergents and causes worse operation of appliances. As a result, it increases utility bills, reduces home comfort, impacts physical health, and worsens living conditions.
Signs of Limescale Problems
The obvious visual signs include chalky coating on taps, sinks, showerheads, bathroom surfaces, etc. Kitchen appliances are gradually getting covered with limescale, which causes an increase in heating times. Progressively, the equipment fails and breaks down. Deposits clog plumbing, which reduces water pressure and results in pipe damage and leaks.

How Water Filters Limescale Work
A water filter that prevents limescale is a softener with ion-exchange resin consisting of tiny negative or positive beads that hold positively or negatively charged ions, respectively. Depending on the resin type, whether it is cationic (holding positive ions, sodium and hydrogen) or anionic (holding negative ions, consisting of oxygen atoms and hydrogen atoms), such softeners differ in application. To remove hardness, cations are used, while anions remove mostly sulfates and chlorides. Some Ecosoft filters combine both media to provide the most comprehensive purification from limescale, chlorine, and more.
The operating process suggests that source water is pushed by a pump through the media, where ions of hard minerals replace similarly charged ions according to fundamental electrostatic principles and stick to resin beads. When the resin is highly polluted, it is regenerated with a brine that washes off calcium and magnesium. Its lifespan depends on source water quality and operating intensity. Typically, it is to be replaced in 3 or more years.
Benefits of a Limescale Filter For Tap
If you prefer a point-of-use water treatment system, install a softener at a tap to treat water only for kitchen needs, for instance. Such a solution is more compact, budget-friendly, and still highly efficient. It protects household appliances from scale, extending their lifespan, reduces soap usage, and delivers tasty, fresh, soft, skin-friendly water.
