FAQ: common questions about limescale removal
-
Why is hard water a problem?
Hard water always leads to limescale. The process is significatly accelerated when hard water is heated hard water is heated, for example in kettles, coffee makers, boilers or washing machines. This limescale buildup can damage your appliances, reduce their energy efficiency, and even clog your pipes.
-
How can I find out how hard my water is?
You can request water hardness information from your local water provider. Alternatively, you can use test strips, or measure it yourself with a digital hardness meter.
-
Is it better to soften water for my entire home or just in the kitchen?
That depends on your living situation: In rented flats or smaller households, kitchen filters are a quick and affordable solution. For property owners a whole-house water softener is the better approach in the long term.
Your budget also plays a role: installing a central water softening system is an investment – but it often makes sense to soften hard water and remove chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities for your entire home.
-
How often should I change the filter cartridges?
It depends on the model and your water usage. Filter jugs typically need a cartridge change every four weeks, while reverse osmosis systems can go 6 to 24 months between changes. The CROSS 90 system even has a smart LED indicator that tells you exactly when to replace the filter – easy and convenient.
For our whole-house water softeners, you'll need to regularly refill the regeneration salt. -
Is soft water healthy?
The dissolved minerals in hard water that cause limescale aren't harmful to humans. They are inconvenient though and can damage your water pipes and your appliances, though.
-
Can house softeners improve shower water quality?
House softeners dramatically enhance shower water quality, which improves skin and hair. Soft water does not cause limescale deposits in a bathroom.
-
What contaminants do house softeners remove?
House softeners remove mostly calcium and magnesium from drinking water. We offer media that also fight sulfates, chlorides, iron, manganese, ammonium, and natural organics.
-
Which filtration system is easier to maintain?
Water softeners with automatic flushing are easier to maintain, as only refilling the salt is required. Also, twin-tank systems regenerate automatically.

To remove hardness from water for household purposes, powerful water softeners are used. In the Ecosoft online shop, you can buy point-of-use and point-of-entry units with ion-exchange resin and ECOMIX media at reasonable prices and install them in your house with no effort to enjoy pure, tasty water.
What is a Water Softener System for a House
Water softeners are designed to fight water hardness through ion exchange. By removing calcium and magnesium, they improve water and protect plumbing, boilers, kitchen appliances, and other household equipment from limescale deposits. It allows avoiding additional expenses.
The operating principle of softeners depends on the media used in the unit. Typically, source water is forced through cartridges with ion-exchange resin. Beads of the resin are charged with safe ions that are replaced with hard ions. As a result, you have soft water that is odourless, fresh, and enriched with natural and neutral mineral compounds, typically sodium or potassium, which do not affect its taste and safety.
Over time, the resin becomes saturated with trapped calcium and magnesium. To restore its filtration capability, it is regenerated with the use of brine that flushes the beads to remove calcium and magnesium to the drain.
Benefits of Home Water Softening Systems
Home water softening systems prevent clogging of pipes and deposits of limescale that cause numerous problems. Water filtration improves the performance of appliances and extends their service life. A softener can be used as a standalone unit or incorporated into RO systems, which fight limescale, chlorine, and over 99% of contaminants to achieve the most comprehensive water purification.
How to Choose the Right Water Softener Solution
The Ecosoft catalogue includes two major types of media for softeners:
- Traditional cationic or anionic ion-exchange resin, holding harmless positively or negatively charged ions, H+ and OH-. The former traps calcium and magnesium. The latter replaces negatively charged ions of sulfates and chloride.
- ECOMIX that is a blend of synthetic and natural ion-exchange resins and porous media. It removes iron, calcium, manganese, ammonium, and natural organics and purifies even highly challenging water.
Both variants are designed for water treatment in houses. When choosing the most appropriate solution, you should clearly understand the purpose and calculate how much tap water is consumed per peak hour to compare the parameter with the flow capacity of a softener. If, upon comparison of key characteristics of several units on our website, you still cannot make a decision, just reach out to our customer support team for a consultation.
