FAQ: common questions about limescale removal

  • Hard water always leads to limescale. The process is significatly accelerated when hard water is heated hard water is heated, for example in kettles, coffee makers, boilers or washing machines. This limescale buildup can damage your appliances, reduce their energy efficiency, and even clog your pipes.

  • You can request water hardness information from your local water provider. Alternatively, you can use test strips, or measure it yourself with a digital hardness meter.

  • That depends on your living situation: In rented flats or smaller households, kitchen filters are a quick and affordable solution. For property owners a whole-house water softener is the better approach in the long term.

    Your budget also plays a role: installing a central water softening system is an investment – but it often makes sense to soften hard water and remove chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities for your entire home.

  • It depends on the model and your water usage. Filter jugs typically need a cartridge change every four weeks, while reverse osmosis systems can go 6 to 24 months between changes. The CROSS 90 system even has a smart LED indicator that tells you exactly when to replace the filter – easy and convenient. 
    For our whole-house water softeners, you'll need to regularly refill the regeneration salt.

  • The dissolved minerals in hard water that cause limescale aren't harmful to humans. They are inconvenient though and can damage your water pipes and your appliances, though.
