Traditional reverse osmosis filters are commonly used in the household for water treatment. They differ from other systems in that their operating principle is based on a very dense membrane with pores about 0.0001 micrometres wide that allows only water to pass. At the filter outlet, there is purified, safe water without odours and pollutants.

A reverse osmosis filter can have additional options, like integrated prefilters for longer membrane service life and cartridges for remineralisation of clean water to enrich the treated water with beneficial minerals, like calcium and magnesium, that enable the human body to function normally. All together, they efficiently eliminate pollutants. The principle of operation is based on the fact that water molecules are smaller than molecules of about 99% of contaminants. Under pressure, RO forces water molecules through the membrane. While the impurities are left in the wastewater that is sent to the drain.

Traditional reverse osmosis filters are space-saving regardless of the configuration. They are easily installed, being connected to the water supply line and drainpipe. Most models work without electricity. But those that provide UV sterilisation and are equipped with pumps require connection to the electricity supply. The maintenance of RO filters is simple and includes the replacement of filter cartridges and a membrane as frequently as a manufacturer recommends in the instructions for every product. Replacement is easy and takes several minutes.

It is better to prefer an RO filter over a non-RO filter if the quality of drinking water is paramount. The osmosis system is highly recommended if:

• the water supply is not reliable;
• there is a risk of delivery of highly polluted water;
• the taste and odour of water make the difference;
• beneficial properties of water are needed to support health. 

If you just want to remove limestone deposits from your appliances, you can use a water softener. To purify water from sediments, chlorine, and pesticides and get a better taste, using a carbon filter will be sufficient.
