Even the smallest impurities in water
Proper hydration is essential – especially for newborns. But many parents wonder: is tap water safe for my baby? In this blog post, you'll find clear answers and practical tips on how to safely provide drinking water for newborns – and why filtered tap water can be a smart and safe solution.
Babies and tap water
A baby’s immune system is much more sensitive than an adult’s, making them more vulnerable to contaminants. In most parts of Europe, tap water is well-regulated. However, when preparing infant formula, there’s more to consider. Even small amounts of heavy metals, PFAS (so-called forever chemicals) or bacteria can pose a risk to your little one.
What’s more, babies’ kidneys are not fully developed right after birth, and giving them water – in addition to breastfeeding or formula – can disrupt their delicate fluid and mineral balance.

When can babies have tap water?
The general recommendation: babies under 6 months old should not drink untreated tap water.
In the early months, breast milk or infant formula covers all your baby’s hydration needs. If you’re preparing water for newborn formula, you should either:
- Boil the tap water to reliably kill any bacteria
- Use a high-quality water filter to remove harmful substances
- Or choose mineral water that’s labeled “suitable for preparing infant formula.” Make sure it has low levels of minerals, especially sodium and sulfate.
Starting around 6 months, when you introduce solid food, you can begin offering your baby small amounts of water to drink. But even then, tap water should only be used under the best and most consistently monitored conditions. If your tap water looks discolored or has a brown tint, it’s best to avoid using it.
Can I use tap water for formula without boiling it?
The short answer: not necessarily.
Although tap water in the United Kingdom is strictly regulated, a few risks remain:
- The water quality in your home depends on your plumbing. Old lead pipes or new copper pipes can be problematic.
- Germs and biofilms can build up in taps or fixtures that aren't used regularly.
- Traces of heavy metals, PFAS, or microplastics aren’t fully removed by standard disinfection.
So, if you plan to use tap water for your baby after 6 months – or if you're wondering, can I use tap water for formula? We recommend erring on the side of caution. That also applies to making water for infant formula. Ask your local water supplier about the quality of your drinking water , or consider getting it tested by an independent lab.
What’s the best water for babies?
The safest options are:
- Fresh tap water that has been boiled for at least 3 minutes
- Mineral water labeled “suitable for preparing infant formula”
- Filtered tap water – using a high-quality water filter that effectively reduces contaminants
Filtered water is often the most practical and sustainable solution for families. It gives you access to clean, fresh drinking water at all times – no more carrying heavy water bottles or worrying about what's coming out of your tap.

Our tip: if the water hasn’t been used recently, let it run for a few seconds until it flows cool and fresh. Stagnant water sitting in the pipes may contain bacteria or particles released from taps and plumbing.

Tap water for babies: Yes – but use it responsibly
If you want to give your baby tap water, it’s important to understand the risks and take proactive steps to minimize them. For example, babies should never drink chlorinated tap water that exceeds the TDI (tolerable daily intake).
With a reliable water filter from Ecosoft, you can bring more safety into your home. However, if your local water quality is poor – or if your building has lead plumbing – it’s better to use certified mineral water when preparing infant formula.
